File Naming "Standards"
Versions of this web site have been available since
1997. Technologies used in capturing files have changed in this time
frame, along with my file naming standards. Originally, files were
given mnemonic names like "unnecessary. PDF" for a paper named "Commercial Data
Base Managers, Statistical Packages, and Report Writers: Is CODAP
Really Necessary?" After a few years and a growing number of papers,
retrieval became a problem and I changed over to the current standard below.
Technical Reports
Now file names are based on the publishing
organization's numbering system. For example, a short technical report
might be named "AFHRL-TR-76-3.pdf".
Because I used to live on a 56k data line (as
some graduate students may still be using "dial-up" lines), I tried to
limit the size of documents to 500Kb or less.
For this reason some documents were split up into several physical files. For
example, the 60-page TR, "Job Analysis in the United States Air Force" is
broken up into multiple files name
- "WADD-TR-61-113-00.pdf" (147Kb),
- "WADD-TR-61-113-01.pdf" (335Kb),
- "WADD-TR-61-113-10.pdf" (409Kb),
- "WADD-TR-61-113-20.pdf" (418Kb),
- "WADD-TR-61-113-30.pdf" (312Kb),
- "WADD-TR-61-113-38.pdf" (459Kb),
- "WADD-TR-61-113-56.pdf" (106Kb),
The newer compression logic in Adobe Acrobat 6.0+
allows me to scan larger and larger documents into the 500Kb ceiling.
Some (hopefully few) documents approach 1 Mb to keep the TR in a single
file, but anything over 1 Mb will be broken up into multiple parts and named
as shown above.
The -nn added to the document name indicates the
STARTING PAGE number in the document. The -00 typically includes the
front cover of the document through the table of contents and all sections
prior to the first page of the report. A page of "-99" indicates the
REFERENCES for the report. While the above example breaks at
relatively even pages, i.e. 1, 10, 20, 30, an attempt has been made to break
at logical points in the reports rather than based on page number. It
is recommend that you load and review the table of contents in the -00 file
to home in part of the report you may find of interest.
Conference Proceedings
Conference papers are denoted as "IOAW05-1985-159.pdf"
where "IOAW" is the International Occupational
Analyst Workshop, "05" is the Fifth Conference, "-1985" is the year, and
"-159" is the page number in the proceedings (this is the "unnecessary.pdf"
paper from above). As with Tech Reports, in conference proceedings,
"-000" includes the Cover through the first paper. The "-999" file
contains the Author's Index. The Military
Testing Association (MTA) changed its name to include "International" at
some point (IMTA40?). To avoid confusion, in this web site, ALL MTA
conference proceedings are denoted as "IMTA" regardless of the year.
Professional Archives
In addition to Tech Reports and Conference
Proceedings, this web site provides access to Professional Archives.
The Innovation Center for Occupational Data
Applications and Practices (ICODAP) manages all the "On Loan" libraries
formerly administered by the Institute for Job and Occupational Analysis
(IJOA). These archives include informal files and reports from
many professionals as well as the organized materials in the Harry L.
Ammerman Library (HLAL) and the E. J. McCormick Library (EJML).
The Harry L. Ammerman Library has an on line
searchable index and we have loaded requested documents.
